This most ingenious and decorative Edwardian box is finely made from solid oak. It has an unusual rise and fall mechanism which cleverly loads a small pencil from its interior on to the central scalloped platform when in the fall position is level with the top surface. It is used to hold a collection of eight small pencils for scoring at a bridge card game. The exterior is decoratively silver mounted. Each mount is ornately shaped and hallmarked. One of the larger side mounts also includes the Birmingham makers mark for J Collyer and Co Ltd (1902 – 1912) adding both the style and strength of this box.
