This remarkable and highly decorative vase originates from India and dates to the late 19th century. It is made from heavy gauge thick copper which makes the intricate decoration far more difficult to achieve as the working process is to raise and hammer the decoration from the outside and inside forming the deep design which is then hand carved and engraved with chisels and punches. This type of decoration is often done with much thinner metal which would be much easier to work with. The decoration is of a classical Indian design with a ribbed ornate foot above which the main body which is of bulbous form has a series of raised cartouches around its diameter each with a different scene, some with men hunting animals from horseback and others with mythical beasts. Above the neck narrows and flares and has a fine hand chased floral design around its exterior. A superb piece of Indian art, boldly decorated with great skill. In good original condition with no damage or repair.
