This very stylish high quality mid 19th century desk inkstand would have been produced by a top English maker, most likely from London.
The inkstand is oval in shape with an impressive, deeply moulded edge which is hand engraved with a bold Celtic influenced boarder. The recessed top is also hand engraved and has four pierced cut out panels mounted with superb polished malachite.
The inkwell has an entwined support with matching engraving. It encloses and holds an elliptical round inkwell which has a flared and shaped rim, which is fitted with a hinged lid, which is also mounted with a bevelled circular polished malachite roundel.
The gilt bronze inkwell is also hand engraved with a similar Celtic influenced design.
The hinged lid of the inkwell opens to reveal a fitted, separate glass and gilt bronze mounted ink container.
The underside of the base of the stand still retains its original red velvet lining.
This remarkable desk accessory is in very good condition. It does show some age related signs of use to the fine, rich gilding, but I would still consider it condition good and very pleasing.
