This rare Chinese jar and cover is hand cut and carved from a block of richly coloured mottled agate with tones varying from deep russet to off white. This hardstone is very difficult to carve and an item like this piece would have taken many days or weeks to produce. The main body is of a shallow bulbous form with graduated fluting around its parameter which rises up to a band of carved decoration around the rim. The cover has matching decoration and is finished with a fluted knob which mirrors the style of the lower section. Remarkably the interior has been very well hollowed and retains a thin even wall thickness showing the great skill of the artist who produced this piece.
Chinese, circa 1930 in excellent condition .
