A most interesting large carved pale russet with darker inclusions Chinese soapstone brush pot. This wonderful object is carved in the form of a large cauldron or cooking pot with a circling group of very interested animals. In the foreground, there are three wolflike creatures, one of which is being ridden by a monkey who is holding onto his ears whilst a large bat is swooping overhead. On the other side, there is another monkey climbing to reach the contents of the large enticing pot with a pheasant like bird lingering in the foreground. This beautiful object is very well three dimensionally carved. The animals and the cauldron are all further decorated with a lightly detailed pattern of symbols and a floral design. This large good quality piece is carved from one solid piece of stone which has wonderful natural colouring and has developed a rich patina. It is in excellent original condition. Chinese, circa 1890.
