This remarkable and small beautifully proportioned Zanzibar chest is a highly decorative piece made from a mixture of teak and rosewood. This sturdy little chest or strongbox Is very ornately mounted with pierced and embossed brass and copper which is held in place with brass and steel nails. Often these boxes are highly polished and this lovely example has been untouched and patinated to an unusual bronze like finish which is very pleasing. The hinged lid opens to reveal a plain interior and below there are two small drawers which are locked from the inside of the chest with two removable steel pegs when the lid is closed and locked with the hinged hasp they are inaccessible making the whole chest secure. There are a pair of brass carrying handles one of which is fitted to each end of the chest for lifting. Zanzibar chests are well known for their ornate decoration; this is the best one we have handled. It is in very good original condition. Zanzibar is an island off East Central Africa which is now part of Tanzania. Included is an original 19th century brass padlock which opens and closes but does not have a key to lock it but adds visual interest to the box.
