An exceptional example of early 20th century Japanese metalwork, this finely crafted circular plaque is executed in matte patinated iron and showcases the remarkable artistry for which Japanese craftsmen are renowned.
The surface has been meticulously hand chased with a striking naturalistic composition depicting a gnarled pine branch adorned with delicately rendered pine needles. Perched within an open section of the design is a majestic eagle poised to take flight in pursuit of two small birds, creating a scene full of movement and dramatic tension. The exquisitely detailed decoration is enriched with luxurious inlays of pure gold and silver. At the same time, intricate hand engraving further enhances the precious metal highlights, adding exceptional depth, texture, and visual contrast.
The plaque bears the artist's signature in Japanese characters, inlaid in silver on the lower left, and is elevated on three elegantly shaped feet, allowing it to be displayed as intended. A superb collector's piece, this work exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and sophisticated decorative techniques of the Taishō period, combining artistic excellence with outstanding attention to detail.
