This fine quality English thermometer was made circa 1860 in Derbyshire, an area renowned at the time for this type of fine work. It is made from local black slate which has been cut and joined to produce the obelisk. This has been carved and inlaid with bright semi-precious cut stones in the form of foliage and flowers around an inlaid thermometer. The stones include turquoise and malachite with other coloured marbles.
This piece is in good original condition with a working thermometer.
