This brilliantly composed and carved walnut black forest figure group is most unusual. It depicts a large bear rearing up on its hid legs and attacking a man who is typically dressed in the rural style of forest workers at this time. He is defending himself with a large bladed knife in one hand which he has plunged into the bear and his other hand is pressed aggressively into the bear’s eye. They are standing on a naturalist base carved in the form of a fallen tree trunk amongst boulders. The movement and expression of both the man and the snarling bear are very realistic to this dire situation. The study is very finely carved in walnut with great detail and rich colour and patination. Circa 1890
