This interesting piece is carved in a harder type sandstone which has a high silica content. It depicts an early Celtic style bearded figure wearing a large hooded cloak and is holding an ornate Celtic staff. This unusual carving is signed with initials on the reverse, possibly BG. This piece shows patination and discolouring to the surface which would have built up through handling and the environment. It is not an easy piece to accurately to date but is most likely 19th century but could be much older.
