This exceptionally well carved bust of a 19th century monk has been produced out of a single piece of rich dense walnut and then mounted onto a separate walnut plinth, all original. It captures this portly and mischievous looking monk with great expression and character even down to the wink of an eye and moles on his face. He is possibly be reprimanded by a senior priest. This very tactile object is full of charm and character. Finely signed by the artist carver on his left shoulder J Chartron.
Circa 1890, in very good original condition with superb color and patination.
