A large 19th century bronze study of the sixteenth century French poet Joachim du Bellay by the sculptor Leofanti Adolphe.

 

This stunning large bronze study depicts the famous sixteenth century French poet Joachim du Ballay who was working in the sixteenth century. (Born 1st May 1522 - died 1st Jan 1560) .He was a poet, critic, and founder of the Pléiade. He notably wrote the manifesto of the group: Défense et illustration de la langue française, which aimed at promoting French as an artistic language, equal to Greek and Latin

This fine quality bronze study was sculpted by the highly regarded French artist Leofanti Adolphe, circa 1870 and shows the handsome bearded poet standing whilst wearing fine clothes from this medieval period with holding a leather bound book in one hand and another resting at his feet.

Fully signed and titled on the rectangular base. This large bronze study has a superb mid brown colour with soft gilt highlights all richly patinated and in very good original condition. This impressive bronze would be an ideal piece for a library or study.
