This amazing Chinese carving has been cut from a single large boulder grey agate hardstone which has some brown and black veins and inclusions which the artist carver had cleverly used to highlight certain parts of this complicated figure group which depicts a Chinese immortal sat riding on the back of a dragon whilst holding symbolic artefacts. He is shown with swirling clouds behind his head with three flying bats. The quality of this carving is superb as is the composition. This rare and eye catching piece is as finely carved on the reverse as the front. Both show very fine detailing to the hands, face, hair etc. This remarkable carving still retains its original finely carved and fitted display stand which is beautifully carved and pierced with swirling clouds raised above a shaped plinth with four feet which is inlaid with fine silver wire in a classical design. Both the carving and the stand are in very good original condition with no damage. The stand has a rich colour and pleasing patination.
