A rare pair of Grand Tour gilt bronze horses of St. Mark Venice, circa 1900

This superb pair of Grand Tour Italian gilt bronzes dates to the late 19th century. They are solid cast and very heavy for their size. They are decorative Grand Tour reproductions taken from the original ones known as the St. Marks Balilica Horses also known as the triumphal quadriga or horses of the hippodrome of Constantinople which are a group of four horses. These finely cast and detailed bronzes have a wonderful original bright gilt finish with age and element patination giving a very pleasing and interesting look. They are mounted on simple olive wood plinths which have a rich dark patination. The bases are finished in a dark green baize cloth to protect polished surfaces. In good condition, Italian, circa 1900
