This superb pair of sculptures depict a pair of male and female goats. They were produced in France in the mid-19th century and were originally sculpted by Pierre Jules Mene in 1844.  These fine examples are cast to a high standard in iron. They show remarkable detail to their features and particularly their fur texture and they are both raised on naturalistic bases.  Iron is an unusual medium that is occasionally used in fine sculptures at this period and is more commonly used with PJ Mene’s works.

In good condition with a pleasing dark patina.

French, circa 1850
