This superb and very unusual piece was undoubtedly made by commission as a one-off. Its small shallow proportions are most unusual and were probably made for a library.
The top is made from one piece of solid rich mahogany with a simple moulded edge. The design is well balanced with a bank of four graduated drawers to each side and fitted with fretted brass handles and escutcheons in the centre. It has a recessed kneehole cupboard with a drawer and a writing slide above. It stands on shaped bracket feet. This piece has good colour and pleasing patinations.
On the back of the cabinet, inscribed in pencil is Moyne House, Durrow County Laois. Circa1760
