A superb Italian majolica pottery hand painted portrait plate of the Renaissance artist Pietro Perugino (1446 – 1523)

 

This highly decorative majolica pottery plate bears the portrait of the famous Renaissance artist Pietro Perugino. It was finely handmade in 1923 to celebrate the life of this important artist who died in 1523.

It is beautifully hand painted in vibrant colours typical of this ware with a foliage wreath boarder with the double date at the bottom. The centre of the plate is an eye catching yellow and has a very accurate portrait of this medieval artist. It is signed on the reverse and comes with its original high quality handmade wooden display stand.

Pietro Perugino (1446 – 1523).

Born 1446 in Citta Della Pieve province of Perugia Umbria Italy.

Born Pietro Vannucci. He was a famous Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian School who painted in oils famous for producing extensive frescoes. Firstly, for the convent of the Ingessati Fathers, he later went on to work in the Sistine Chapel, Rome and later in Florence where he had a studio.
