This decorative and rare pair of black forest walnut bookends are carved in solid walnut each from one piece of rich dense timber in the form of two 18th century rural musicians. They are both similarly dressed in working clothes from the black forest region of this time with a jacket, waistcoat plus fours, wooden clogs and a wide brimmed hat. One is playing a simple bag pipe instrument and the other a wooden horn. They are both seated and behind them forming the book rest is a carved stone wall. The quality of carving tin these pieces is very good with well defined faces and hair and good detail to the hands and  fingers. A most pleasing and useful pair of bookends with a good rich colour and patination, circa 1900.
