This superb mid 19th century miniature mahogany dresser base is one of the finest examples I have ever seen. It was possibly made as an apprentice passing out piece but it is so good that I feel it was probably a travelling sales mans sample which would have been taken out to show retail customers in the hope of taking orders from it. It is correct in its scale and proportion. It stands on eight finely turned d feet with a moulded plinth. Above there is a central recessed cupboard with a shaped panel and a knob. This is surrounded by seven graduated and fully dovetailed drawers all with matching knobs. The corners of the cabinet have been finely detailed with quarter columns and this radial form follows through the plinth and top which is shaped to match. The dresser has a low shaped back with six false drawers with matching knobs. The interior can be accessed by lifting the hinged shelf top above. This feature can often be seen on full size examples. The attention to detail, scaling and workmanship is second to none. The drawers even have the same original blue paper lining. The most pleasing detail of this piece is its colour and fine patination which is all original and really has the best genuine age related finish I have seen on a piece of miniature furniture. English, circa 1850.
