This beautiful hand carved Chinese hardstone study depicts an elephant with his trunk raised whilst holding a ball. On his back, there are two playful Buddhist lions who are trying to retrieve the ball. The elephant is finely carved from a green hardstone which has natural brown and black inclusions. Before being worked, the artist has cleverly managed to use these different colours to carve the two Buddhist lions and the ball. This would have taken great skill when planning to carve this composition.
This sculpture is displayed on its original hand carved hardwood stand which has four location pockets for the elephant's feet to securely fit into.
Chinese Circa 1930.
