This most interesting circular Indian papier mache box is a fine piece. It is decorated around the sides with hand-worked foliate gilt boarders which also form panels with reentrant corners. Each with a different finely detailed raised gilt male figure wearing traditional costume in the centre.
The top has similar boarders and panels which are decorated with applied gilt butterflies and in the central panel, there is a similar exotic bird. The lid lifts off to show a plain lacquered interior. On the underside of the box, it has a signed inscription. In good condition, circa 1900
