This superb and highly decorative mid-19th century oil on canvas is by the Italian artist F Morelli. Whose work comes up for auction or sale infrequently. After researching this artist, I have found the subject matter for his work is always of this type. He specialised in painting Italian rural characters such as gypsies and peasants often with a pretty young lady as in this fine example. It depicts a young bearded gypsy male musician playing the fiddle to a pretty young girl, both brightly clothed relaxing sat in a doorway of a whitewashed cottage with flagons and bottles around them.
