A large pair of late 19th century Chinese brush pots made from bamboo. They are deeply carved with panels depicting Chinese figures and pagodas among a wooded landscape.
Although showing age related shrinkage cracks, they are in good condition with a rich colour and patina.
Brush pots are containers for holding the brushes used by scribes for Chinese calligraphy . The brushes would be rinsed and stored in the pots with their handles down so that the bundles of hair would keep their shape and point.
