This superb and rare pair of Japanese Meiji period bronze bookends are cast in solid bronze and depict a pair of adult bull elephants with their heads raised and trunks outstretched. These finely sculpted pieces are beautifully finished with great detail to the skin texture. The tusks are made from ivory. Interestingly, this pair of bronzes when positioned in a particular way, can be displayed as a pair of figures and looking at them from the front it is not possible to see the side designed to be used as book supports. When they are used for this purpose, they look superb with a row of fine leather books resting between them. These pieces are both signed on their bases. Circa 1900
