This handsomely modelled gilt bronze by Emmanuel Fremiet (French 1824-1910) is a finely detailed study of a 19th century French Napoleonic soldier standing in full uniform and kit, holding his rifle. This figure is further enhanced by being mounted onto a turned green marble stand with a gilt collar below.
It is engraved on the edge of the base F Barbedienne and the signature of the artist is prominent on the top surface.
The Barbedienne foundry is generally considered to be the premier 19th century foundry for bronze sculpture. It was founded in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas.
