This highly elaborate French gilt bronze desk pen and inkstand is decorated with fine detail in the Greek style with a raised central section that houses a pair of glass ink vessels with hinged covers.
Almost every surface has beautifully cast floral decoration. There are two panels at the front which depict Greek female artists and a pair of sphinx each side which represents a demon of esoteric wisdom in ancient Greek. At the front, there is a shallow tray for storing pens. This high quality decorative stand is raised on five stepped plain feet and is constructed with threaded bolts and hand made circular nuts which can be seen from the underside. Good original condition with no repairs. Circa 1830
