An Italian Grand Tour late 19th century jewellery cabinet finished in gilt tooled leather with a hand coloured view of The Royal Palace, Caserta Italy.

This superb and rare Italian Grand Tour jewellery or specimen cabinet is a remarkable piece in fantastic original condition. It is made from olive wood and covered in fine graded leather which has been coloured, panelled and finished with very precise gilt tooled boarders and motifs.

The front has a hinged door with a lock and key that is inset with a fine hand coloured lithograph image of an early 19th century view of the grand Italian palace of Caserta with its ornamental gardens in the foreground and lakes or sea in the distance. This image is set into the door behind glass and retains rich unfaded colours.

The door opens onto a fine gilt brass hinge with polished and heat treated blued steel screws and reveals a most pleasing interior of four small drawers finished in fine hand tooled leather with shaped brass knobs. Their interiors are also in polished olive wood with immaculate green watered silk padded bases which match the inside of the door.

The interior is in completely untouched condition showing the true original finish which has always been protected from sunlight and wear.

The overall condition of the fine piece is remarkably good. These pieces seldom survive in such good order.

There are two small shrinkage cracks to the back panel, but everything else is very good with the original key and working lock.

Italian, circa 1880.
