A Superb 19th century gilt bronze bust of Diana the Huntress after Jean Antoine Houdon (1741 – 1828)

 

This very pleasing mellow gilt bronze portrait bust depicts Dianna the Huntress. She was a goddess in Roman and Hellenistic religions and was considered a patroness of the countryside, hunters, crossroads and the moon. She equated to the Greek goddess Artemis. This very fine sculpture was produced originally by the highly acclaimed French artist Jean Antoine Houdon (1741 – 1828). This fine example is French, 19th century. It is very well cast and finished with superb hand chased detailing and has a lovely mellow satin gilt finish which is in excellent condition. It has a hand engraved inscription on the front edge of the square stand which reads Diane de Houdon (Diana by Houdon) circa 1870
