This superb okimono is beautifully hand carved from a very dense richly coloured single piece of hardwood. It is very nicely detailed especially to the head, hair and facial features with the eyes inlaid in horn. It depicts an elderly man dressed in simple robes with a large sunhat hanging from a neck cord down his back. He has discovered whilst on his travels a large bat and has sat down to examine the creature whilst encouraging it to fly to safety. This figure is of a slightly earlier date to most similar pieces. The subject matter is most appealing and this carving has developed a wonderful patina which is very pleasing to the eye and tactile to hold. It is in good condition with a few very minor light age related shrinkage cracks. Japanese, circa 1860
