A very well modelled and detailed example of the ancient Roman lost Hellenistic statue, the dying Gaul, sometimes referred to as the dying Galatian or the dying gladiator. The original full scale sculpture is on display in the Capitoline Museum in Rome. This fine mid 19th century example has a very pleasing mellow brown patination and is in excellent condition. It is a good piece of classical sculpture with much finer detailing than most examples available. It is a hand finished bronze with fine chasing to the hair, face, hands, feet and loin cloth etc. And would make a good addition to any collection or home. Circa 1860
