Code: 10119

Dimensions:

W: 33cm (13")H: 21cm (8.3")D: 24cm (9.4")

A rare and superb quality Indian Raj period horn workbox. The exterior is of a stylised sarcophagus shape standing on bun feet. It is completely veneered in mellow faded horn which has been carved with a graduated reeded decoration throughout. At the top, there is a carved finial which is intricately carved with two radial tears of reeded decoration with a roundel in the centre. This is used to lift the lid which is hinged and opens onto a hinged stay to keep the lid upright. When open it reveals a very detailed fitted satinwood and horn interior. This horn is much darker as it has been protected from natural sunlight. The main section has an assortment of compartments, some with matching carved horn lids and others for horn cotton reels, thread winders a thimble etc. and to the rear, there are two padded velvet pin cushions and next to each one there is a small wooden needle book veneered in Indian Tunbridge style marquetry. The whole of the fitted interior lifts out like a tray and there is a large storage area below. On the inside of the satinwood lid, there is a hinged door decorated with engraved bone and ebony which opens to reveal a storage area that would have been used to house a note book or possibly a bible. This rare box is complete and in very good original condition.
