This superb example was made in the late 19th century by the prestigious French carriage clock maker Francois-Arsene Margain. It is in marvellous condition with a most elaborate richly gilded case which is beautifully hand engraved with sharp detail displaying high-quality workmanship with intricate panels of flowers and leaves and foliate scrolls all set within lined boarders, even the pilasters and handle are engraved as is the back of the case. The movement is eight-day striking and repeating on a gentle gong marking the hour and half hour. It has a repeat button to check the nearest hour on the top of the case. The plain rectangular white dial has simple black numerals with the minutes marked around designed not to draw the attention away from the fine detail decorating the case. This piece is in good working order. The escapement is an old replacement which has a traditional silvered finish. A most pleasing clock in superb condition.
Francoise –Arsene Margaine worked from both 22 Rue Beranger and 54 Rue De Bondy in Paris, he was known for providing beautiful carriage clocks of the finest quality.
A Margaine received a silver medal for his pendules de voyage at the Paris exhibition of 1878 and again in 1889.
