A Superb Chinese Carved Hardwood Chest/blanket Box

This highly decorative piece is free standing and would look superb in a central position. It has most elaborately carved panels on all five sides. This rectangular chest has a solid hardwood frame which is carved around each side with a mixture of symbols, patterns, flowers and birds. The frame is recessed and is fitted with a solid hardwood panel to each side and top. These panels are carved with panoramic views of battles with fighting warriors and family scenes with groups of figures set amongst buildings and trees. This piece is far the best quality of its type I have ever seen.
The raised feet are carved in the form of foo dogs and elevate the chest beautifully. The lid is hinged and can be fastened with an elaborate hand chased circular bronze hasp. When opened the interior reveals a good capacity of storage with a separate lift out tray for smaller items. The interior is fully lined in thin sheets of camphor wood which is designed to protect fabrics from moths and other insects and still retains the fresh scent from when it was made.
