This superb animalier bronze study by the highly acclaimed French sculptor Jules Moigniez (1835 - 1894) depicts a cock pheasant on a landscaped base. He is stepping on to a tree stump where a weasel is hiding below. The pheasant has a surprised expression and stance.
The detail of this piece is outstanding - the plumage on the pheasant is hand chased and very realistic.
The bronze is finished with a brown patina on the pheasant and weasel and the base is in dark green mounted on a verde antico marble plinth with moulded and canted corners.
This piece is in good condition and fully signed.
Interestingly, Jules Moigniez (28.5.1835 - 29.5.1894) was a French animalier sculptor known for his highly detailed bronze animals as this example shows. His bird sculptures became particularly popular in England and America.
