A Rare 19th Century Folk Art Spice Box

SOLD

Code: 613259

Dimensions:

W: 19cm (7.5")H: 14cm (5.5")D: 19cm (7.5")

This wonderful box is made of steel, the interior is made from tin which has divisions for storing expensive spices.
The centre has the original grater for grating spices such as nutmeg and ginger. The box dates to the early Victorian period and has been decorated in the form of a circular thatched cottage at a slightly later date as an amusing piece of rare primitive folk art. The cottage has painted doors and windows to both sides with climbing roses on the walls. The lid has a textured finish which appears to be in the form of lacquer with a turned and painted knob in the form of a chimney. The box has its original hinge and hasp with original nickel plated padlock.
This piece is in good condition with some age related wear and patina. The chimney has been repaired at some stage.
