Chinese 19th C carved Soapstone figure group, circa 1900

This intricately carved Chinese soapstone figure group depicts four storks amongst a rocky foreground with large twisted and gnarly pine trees in the background. The depth of carving and three dimensional detail is excellent. The work is that of a true craftsman. The main carving is in a pale green jade coloured stone and the carved and moulded base is from a separate piece of russet.

Soapstone was popular with Chinese craftsmen in the 19^th century who found its relatively soft marble like texture easy to work with and carved intricate decorative pieces like this fine example.
