This superb vase was made by aristocratic potter, Sir Edmund Harry Elton at his sunflower pottery studio at Clevedon Court, Somerset, England circa 1890. He produced these exotic wares in very small numbers as individual pieces which were retailed at high class stores in England and America at exclusively high prices. This impressive example is of an unusual form. It has a low bulbous body which flows into a tall straight neck with a moulded rim. Below, connecting the neck and body there are three loop handles equally spaced around its diameter. Together these unusual features are very pleasing to the eye. The vase is wonderfully glazed with rich and soft tones green and blue which flow together in a marble like design over which there is a raised and incised trailing stem of clematis in complementary colours of beige and brown. A fine example from this rare pottery works. In very good original condition, no restoration and clearly signed Elton on the underside
