This most decorative pair of classical Medici lions were produced at Lancaster and Sons Hanley pottery works and they are amusing caricatures of the classical Roman originals which were sculptured in marble and are displayed at the Loggia Dei Lanzi in Florence, Italy.
These examples show the pair of standing male lions with one leg raised and paw resting on a sphere or ball, very similar to the originals but with exaggerated and quirky proportions. They are raised onto moulded rectangular plinths with concave canted corners. The pair of lions are in perfect original condition. They are beautifully painted and glazed in varying shades of tan and brown and have inset glass eyes. Both figures are marked on the underside with the Lancaster and Sons back stamp circa 1920.
Each lion measures height 28.5cm x width 35cm x depth 14cm
