This superb pair of highly decorative late 19th century bronzes depict the classical figures of Mercury the Roman messenger god and Fortuna the Roman goddess of fortune. The figure of Mercury is after the original by Giambologna whilst that of Fortuna after Fulconis. Both figures have one arm raised in an energetic pose supporting themselves one leg about to take flight. The bronzes are well cast with good detail. They are both raised onto double sectioned circular black marble basis with a cast bronze centre panel decorated with a raised relief scene with Putti amongst boats, lakes and gardens. A very pleasing pair of elegant French bronzes with a mid brown patination. In good condition circa 1880
