This 19th century French sculpture is the work of the highly acclaimed French sculptor Emile Louis Picault (1833 – 1915).

It depicts a muscular and bearded semi naked blacksmith working in his forge heating a metal plough blade in his furnace which is giving off tremendous heat. He wears only a thick leather apron for protection as he hammers the red hot metal into shape on his anvil which is raised onto a tall pedestal. Around his feet, he has an interesting assortment of tools and implements used in his trade. The modelling and workmanship are superb showing good muscular definition and a powerful natural stance with very good detail to the face, hands and feet. Signed on the base E. Picault and entitled on the front edge in Latin “Opus Improbus Omnia Vincit”,  meaning " work conquers all”

In good condition with a mid brown patination, French, circa 1890
